Initially established as Janghang Smelter in 1936, LS MnM has grown into a world-class metals/materials company.
Here are some of the milestones we have accomplished on the way.
Birth of the non-ferrous metal smelting industry on the Korean Peninsula.
In 1936, the start of operation of the blast furnace at the Janghang Smelter marked the beginning of Korea's non-ferrous metal smelting industry. The Janghang Smelter, which was one of the three major dry smelting facilities in Joseon at the time, was reborn as the center for the non-ferrous metal smelting industry, a core field of the domestic heavy chemical industry, after it went through a series of full-scale expansions and facility supplementations following the liberation.
The construction of the lead (Pb) smelting plant was completed in September 1964 according to the 5-year business plan established following nationalization.
The construction of the cyanidation Plant was completed in June 1964 according to the 5-year business plan established following nationalization.
The National Reconstruction Supreme Council, established immediately after May 16, 1951, sought a way to rationalize the operation of the Janghang Smelter, prepared a plan to make it public with full investment from the state, and nationalized it as Korea Mining & Smelting Corporation.
The founding of Joseon Smelting Co., Ltd. sparked the growth of the Korean copper smelting industry.
Joseon Smelting designed a plan to build the Janghang Smelter, the largest and the only dry smelting plant in South Korea. On February 14, 1935, engineering works for its construction began in Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and a completion ceremony was held the following year, on June 3, 1936.
